DIMONDALE – A downtown mainstay known for its baked breads and old-fashioned donuts will close its doors this month, just shy of its 50-year anniversary.

Mike’s Village Restaurant, a family-owned and operated eatery, has been in the same spot in the 100 block of North Bridge Street in downtown Dimondale since June 4, 1968.

The business will close for good May 12, owner Mike Chappell said.

Chappell, 75, started the business shortly after moving to Dimondale, after having worked for seven years at a fast-food restaurant.

“I didn’t know anything about running a restaurant except for what I learned at McDonald’s,” he said Tuesday.

He brought with him his grandmother’s recipe for “old-fashioned fry cakes” or donuts, and developed an interest in baking breads and desserts after he opened.

Bromley Chappell has been helping his father, who served as village president in Dimondale for more than a decade, run the business for 13 years. He started working at the family business when he was 14, and said the decision to close was “unbelievably difficult.”

“I’ve thought about it for the past year,” Bromley said. “How do we say good-bye or get more people in the door?”

Mike said he “wanted to keep it going.”

A Note From Bromley

To all the great folks who have supported my father’s restaurant I sincerely appreciate your support, love and loyalty. I feel the need to apologise to everyone. Employees, friends, family our regulars for Mike’s closing.

For a while now my father and I have been talking and trying to figure out how to keep Mike’s open. It’s a bit of a shock this has happened so fast.

I have spent my entire life at our familys restaurant and it’s really hard for me to imagine life without it. I want to thank all the employees past and present for your hard work and dedication. To all customers past and present thanks for your support and friendship, we couldn’t have made it this long without you.

I have read all the comments and I appreciate all the kind words and memories, my heart hurts for all the broken hearts!

Just Shy of 50th Anniversary Local Business Closes

Just Shy of 50th Anniversary Local Business Closes

DIMONDALE, Mich The doors shut for the last time at a neighborhood gathering spot in downtown Dimondale Saturday. Mike’s Village Restaurant has been serving homemade meals for nearly 50 years. Known for its scratch made baked goods and friendly atmosphere customers were shocked, when a week ago the family owned business announced on Facebook that Saturday May 12th would be its final day.

A surge of customer support since then had an unexpected consequence, they ran out of food sooner than expected and posted that Saturday, May 5th would be their final day for business. Owner Mike Chapple says business had declined in recent years and he felt the time had come to close the business. Hundreds of comments showing support and sadness are posted on their Facebook page as well as a message of thanks from the owner. The Restaurant first opened on June 4th 1968
